Dunning tools compared: Stripe, Churn Buster, Churnkey, Baremetrics and Creator Dunning

Every dedicated failed-payment tool is priced for SaaS companies. Here is what each one costs and does as of September 2026, and which one makes sense for a creator with a membership or a paid newsletter.

Start with what Stripe already gives you

If your renewals run on Stripe Billing, which is the case for Ghost, Substack, Circle paywalls and your own Stripe Checkout, two recovery tools are already included in the 0.7% Billing fee. Smart Retries re-attempts soft declines at times Stripe's model picks, eight tries within two weeks by default. Stripe can also email the customer after each failed payment with a link to a Stripe-hosted page where they update their card. That email is a setting: in the Stripe dashboard, go to Billing, then Revenue recovery, and turn on Send emails when card payments fail.

Turn both on before paying for anything. Stripe reports that Billing users recover about 55% of failed payments on average; consumer businesses tend to land lower, for reasons covered in why subscription payments fail.

What the dedicated tools add, and when they pay for themselves

Churn Buster, Churnkey and Baremetrics go further than Stripe: text messages, their own retry logic, in-app walls that stop a past-due customer until they update their card, and cancel flows that offer a pause or discount before someone leaves. For a business with serious recurring revenue those extras are worth real money.

The arithmetic is simple. Take your monthly recurring revenue, multiply by the share that churns each month, then by the 20–40% of churn that is involuntary. At $40,000 a month with 5% monthly churn, failed payments cost roughly $400–800 a month, and a $250 tool can earn its keep. At $3,000 a month with the same churn, they cost roughly $30–60 a month, so a $250 tool costs several times what it could ever recover.

Where Creator Dunning fits, and where it doesn't

We built Creator Dunning for the second case: a membership or paid newsletter where each failed renewal is a person you know by name. It emails the subscriber from your business name, with replies going to you, the moment a renewal fails, and follows up every three days until they pay or 30 days pass. Anyone already past due is picked up when you connect, and a free audit shows what failed payments cost you over the last 90 days.

What it does not do, so you can rule it out quickly:

  • No text messages, no in-app walls and no cancel flows. Retries stay with Stripe's Smart Retries.
  • It only sees renewals that are Stripe subscriptions in your own Stripe account. Memberful, Outseta, WooCommerce Subscriptions and Patreon run their own billing, so they aren't supported.
  • Substack sends its own failed-payment email, so a Substack reader may hear from both. Ghost relies on your Stripe settings, so there you choose whether Stripe's email stays on alongside ours.

How to choose

  • Under a few thousand dollars a month: turn on Stripe's retries and failed-payment emails, then add personal follow-ups, yourself or with Creator Dunning.
  • Tens of thousands a month, with a product people log into: a dedicated tool with in-app walls and cancel flows is likely worth its price. Try Churnkey or Baremetrics for SaaS, Churn Buster for subscription commerce.
  • Not sure where you are: run the free failed-payment audit. It reads your last 90 days of failed invoices and changes nothing in Stripe.
