For beehiiv publishers with paid subscriptions
Recover failed beehiiv subscription payments automatically
beehiiv bills each paid subscription as a Stripe subscription in the Stripe account you set up for it. When a renewal fails, Creator Dunning emails the reader in your name with the amount and a link to pay, then every three days for up to 30 days, and it stops when they pay.
Founding offer: connect by December 31, 2026 and it's free until June 30, 2027, however many subscribers you have. No card needed.

SubjectYour $8.00 payment to Jane's Field Notes didn't go through
Hi Sam,
We couldn't process the $8.00 payment for your Jane's Field Notes subscription. Your subscription stays active for now, but we'll need an updated payment method to keep it that way.
Update your payment method and pay now

beehiiv's help center describes no failed-payment email of its own. It recommends switching on Stripe's, and notes that Stripe's failed-payment and expiring-card emails are off by default on a new Stripe account. Unless you've found that setting, a reader whose card fails hears nothing while Stripe retries, and if your Stripe settings cancel the subscription after the last retry, their paid access ends there.
How Creator Dunning connects
When you turn on paid subscriptions, beehiiv creates a new account under your Stripe login, separate from any you already had, and your readers' subscriptions live there. Connect that account to Creator Dunning through Stripe; we read its subscriptions and invoices. Nothing changes in beehiiv, and a reader who pays renews in Stripe like any other subscriber.
Common questions
Before you connect.
Which Stripe account do I connect?
The one beehiiv created for your paid subscriptions. It sits under your Stripe login as a separate account (in Stripe, it's in the account switcher at the top left), so pick that one when Stripe asks. If you're not sure, connect and the audit will show whether your renewals appear.
I moved my paid subscribers from Substack or another platform. Does that matter?
No. beehiiv's migration tool copies active subscriptions into the account beehiiv set up, and once billing in the old account is cancelled, as beehiiv asks, their renewals are charged there. Connecting that account covers them too.
Will readers get two emails?
Only if you've switched on Stripe's failed-payment email (Stripe: Billing, Revenue recovery, Emails), as beehiiv suggests. Keep both, or leave Stripe's off so readers hear from you every three days and nothing more.
Where do readers update their card?
The link in our email goes to Stripe's hosted page for that invoice, where the reader updates their card and pays without signing in to beehiiv.
How long do the reminders run?
Until the reader pays or the subscription ends, for up to 30 days. Stripe retries the card on the schedule in your Stripe settings (it recommends 8 tries within 2 weeks), and if those settings cancel the subscription after the last retry, our reminders stop then too.
Roughly one in ten renewals fails
Most of them are fixable.
Involuntary churn is 20–40% of all subscription churn, and Stripe's default retries recover only 25–35% of failed consumer payments. A timely, personal email closes most of that gap. See the numbers and sources.
